HP Laserjet pro MFP M128fn

Problem:

  • The printer works fine when powered on, but after it enters sleep mode, it becomes unresponsive.
  • When attempting to print or scan after the printer has gone into sleep mode, the display remains blank, and the printer doesn't function. However, the power button remains lit, indicating the printer is still powered on.
  • The printer is connected to a computer via USB.
  • Navigation through the printer settings is difficult, even when the printer is awake and functioning. The display remains unresponsive or difficult to navigate, making it challenging to adjust settings such as sleep mode timeout.

Additional Details:

  • The issue is specific to sleep mode, as the printer works immediately after being powered on but stops functioning once it goes into sleep mode.
  • Once the printer wakes up, it is usable again, but navigating through settings (such as adjusting the sleep timeout or power settings) remains problematic.
  • Attempts to adjust settings via the printer’s display are unsuccessful due to the unresponsiveness of the control panel during operation.

Hi @siva59,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M128fn printer is having issues with sleep mode when using a USB connection, Please try the steps shared and let me know if this helps

Step 1: Please remove the Cartridges from the Printer if possible, and try a Hard Reset, do keep us posted to help you better

** Hard reset :
1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on. The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
9. Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Step 2: Update the HP Firmware: Click Here

Step 3: Review Sleep Settings:

  • Access Printer Settings: Access the printer's control panel and navigate to the settings menu.
  • Check Sleep Timer: Review the sleep timer settings and adjust them if necessary.
  • Check for Auto-Off/Power Save: Ensure that the "Auto-Off" or "Power Save" mode is not enabled, or adjust the timeout period.

Step 4: Reset Network Settings (if applicable):

  • If Network Connected: If the printer is connected to a network, try resetting the network settings and reconnecting it to your network

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
