Hi @berlenedr

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP LaserJet printer is only printing in black and white and not in color, here are some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:

1. Check Printer Model

  • First, confirm that your printer model supports color printing. Some models are monochrome and cannot print in color.

2. Check Color Settings

  • On your computer, go to Printers & Scanners in Settings.
  • Select your HP LaserJet printer and click on Manage.
  • Click on Printing Preferences and look for color options. Ensure it is set to print in color, not grayscale or black and white.

3. Check Toner Cartridges

  • Ensure that all color toner cartridges are installed and have toner. If any cartridge is low or empty, the printer may default to black and white.
  • Check for any alerts or error messages regarding toner levels.

4. Run Printer Diagnostics

  • Use the built-in diagnostics tool, if available, to check for issues. Refer to the printer’s manual for instructions.

5. Update Drivers

  • Make sure your printer drivers are up to date. Visit the HP Support website to download the latest drivers for your printer model.

6. Print Test Page

  • Print a test page to see if it includes color. You can usually find this option in the printer's settings or via the HP Smart app.

7. Check for Software Issues

  • Ensure that the software or application you are printing from supports color printing. Some applications may have specific print settings.

8. Reset Printer Settings

  • If changes to settings are not resolving the issue, consider resetting the printer to its factory settings. Refer to the printer manual for the reset process.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I have seen HP drivers fail often to detect the color printer properly and not enable it.

Try this on your computer

Go to control pane>devices and printers and right click on the icon for your printer and select "printer properties" from the drop down menu. Click on "device settings" and scroll down until you see device type and change to color from auto.
