Hi @pukapants

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Got it — your HP OfficeJet Pro completely stopped working, and you’ve already:

Unplugged/replugged,

Removed/added printer again,

Tried HP’s Virtual Assistant steps…

Let’s go a little deeper and systematically narrow down whether it’s a hardware issue (printer itself), connection issue, or driver/software issue.

Step 1: Check if Printer Powers On & Responds

Does the display panel light up?

Can you print a self-test page directly from the printer?

On most OfficeJets → press Setup → Reports → Printer Status Report.

If this prints → the printer hardware is fine. If not, it’s a hardware failure (mainboard/power).

Step 2: Check Connection Type

USB: Try a different cable & port.

Wi-Fi:

Run Wireless Network Test from printer’s control panel.

Check if it has an IP address.

Ethernet: Check cable lights & router.

If the printer isn’t getting an IP address or doesn’t show up on your network → network config issue.

Step 3: Clear Windows Print Subsystem (if you’re on Windows 10/11)

Press Win + R → type:

  1. services.msc

Find Print Spooler → right-click → Restart.

Then go to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS → delete files inside.

Re-add the printer.

Step 4: Reinstall Full HP Software/Driver

Sometimes the “basic driver” that Windows auto-installs causes failures.

Uninstall HP software/drivers from Control Panel → Programs & Features.

Restart PC.

Download the HP Easy Start / Full Feature Software for your model from HP’s support site.

Reinstall and test.

Step 5: Firmware Update (if printer responds)

From control panel: Setup → Printer Maintenance → Update the Printer.

Or via HP Smart app (if it still connects).

Can you tell me what exact model number of OfficeJet Pro you have (e.g., 8710, 9015, 7740, etc.) and whether you’re connecting by USB, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet

That’ll let me give you the exact recovery steps for your setup.

If my response helped, please mark it as an Accepted Solution It helps others and spreads support. 💙 Also, tapping "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" makes a big difference! Thanks! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
