Hi @Sun-Shine7,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating it feels when your HP OfficeJet 6978’s ink carriage is stuck on the right side, especially if you were in the middle of printing something important. Let’s get that carriage moving again so your printer feels “alive” and ready to work for you.

When the printer shuts down improperly, the carriage can lock in place. Here’s what you can do:

Step-by-Step Fix

  • Power Reset the Printer
    • With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer.
    • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    • Wait at least 60 seconds to give the printer time to relax and reset.
    • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet, then into the printer.
    • Turn the printer back on.

  • Check for Obstructions
    • Open the ink cartridge access door.
    • Gently look inside for any paper scraps or debris that might be blocking the carriage.
    • If you see anything, carefully remove it.

  • Manually Move the Carriage
    • With the printer unplugged, gently try to slide the carriage to the center.
    • Do not force it; just a gentle nudge to free it if it’s stuck.

  • Restart and Test
    • Close the access door.
    • Plug the printer back in and power it on.
    • Try printing a test page.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
