I  tried to print a two-sided doc yesterday.  One printed fine and then the next one I sent to printer jammed up.  I removed the paper from the back and I cannot get rid of the jam message.  What can I do?

Message is "remove the rear access panel or automatic two-sided printing accessory from the back of the printer, and then clear any paper.  If required, open the front cover or ink cartridge access door and clear any paper.  Touch OK when done."

Hi @KimRenee1,

I'd like to help with the paper jam issue.

Step 1: Look for jammed paper

Paper jams can occur in multiple areas of the printer. If you cannot find the paper jam in one area, continue to the next area until you locate the jam.

   CAUTION:

Trying to clear a paper jam from the front of the printer can damage the print mechanism. Gain access to and clear paper jams through the rear of the printer whenever possible.

Clear jammed paper from the rear of the printer

Remove any jammed paper that is accessible from the rear of the printer.

  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

  2. While the printer is still on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

       WARNING:

Disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the printer to avoid risk of injuries or electric shock.

  3. Turn the printer so that the rear of the printer faces you.

  4. Press the two buttons at the ends of the duplexer, and then pull the duplexertowards you to remove it.

    Image: Remove the duplexer.

  5. Gently remove any jammed paper or bits of torn paper from the rollers inside the printer. Use both hands to pull any whole sheets of paper to avoid tearing them.

    Image: Remove the jammed paper.

  6. If the paper tears, remove the torn pieces from the rollers and wheels.

    Image: Remove bits of paper.

  7. If you do not see jammed paper in the rear access area, press the tabs on the sides of the duplexer, and then lower the cover.

Image: Press the tabs to open the duplexer.

  8. Remove any jammed paper from inside the duplexer.

  9. Close the duplexer cover.

  10. Gently push the duplexer into the printer until it snaps firmly into place. Do not press the buttons on the end of the duplexer while you reattach it.

    Image: Reattach the duplexer.

  11. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn on the printer.

Try to print. If the error persists, check for jammed paper in another area of the printer.

Clear jammed paper from the output tray

Remove any jammed paper that is accessible from the output tray area.

  1. Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord.

       WARNING:

Disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the printer to avoid risk of injuries or electric shock.

  2. Remove all paper from the output tray.

  3. Check the rollers in the output tray for jammed paper.

  4. Use a flashlight to see the rollers in the printer.

  5. Gently remove any jammed paper or bits of torn paper from the output tray rollers. Use both hands to pull out any whole sheets of paper to avoid tearing them.

  6. Remove any bits of paper or torn pieces of paper from the output tray rollers.

  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn on the printer.

Try to print. If the error persists, check for jammed paper in another area of the printer.

Clear jammed paper from the input tray

Remove any jammed paper that is accessible from the input tray area.

  1. Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord.

       WARNING:

Disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the printer to avoid risk of injuries or electric shock.

  2. Raise the output tray.

    Image: Raise the output tray.

  3. Remove all paper from the input tray.

  4. Grasp any jammed paper in the input tray with both hands, and then pull the paper slowly but firmly toward you to remove it.

       CAUTION:

Remove paper from the tray as carefully as possible. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the printer, more paper jams are likely to occur, and this could damage the print mechanism.

  5. Lower the output tray.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn on the printer.

Try to print. If the error persists, check for jammed paper in another area of the printer.

Clear jammed paper from the ink cartridge access area

Remove any loose or jammed paper that is accessible from the ink cartridge access area.

  1. Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord.

       WARNING:

Disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the printer to avoid risk of injuries or electric shock.

  2. Place your fingers into the slot on the left side of the printer, and then pull forward to open the ink cartridge access door.

  3. Grasp any jammed paper in the carriage path with both hands, and then pull the paper slowly but firmly toward you to remove it.

Image: Pull the jammed paper from the carriage path.

  4. If the ink cartridge carriage is not obstructed, move the carriage to the left of the printer.

Image: Move the ink cartridge carriage.

  5. Remove any jammed paper. To avoid tearing the paper, use both hands to pull out the paper.

Image: Gently remove any jammed paper from the carriage path.

  6. Use a flashlight to check for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the printer, more jams are likely to occur.

Image: Paper jammed in carriage path

  7. Move the carriage back to its position on the right side of the printer.

  8. Close the ink cartridge access door.

  9. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn on the printer.

Try to print. If the error persists, check for jammed paper in another area of the printer.

Clear jammed paper from the automatic document feeder (ADF).

  1. Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord.

       WARNING:

Disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the printer to avoid risk of injuries or electric shock.

  2. Remove any originals from the document feeder tray.

    Image: Remove any originals.

  3. Lift the cover of the ADF until it stops.

    Image: Lift the ADF cover.

  4. Check for any jammed paper in the rear of the ADF.

  5. Gently grasp any jammed paper in the ADF with both hands, and then pull the paper slowly but firmly upward to remove it.

  6. Lift the tab located on the front edge of the ADF to raise the ADF mechanism.

  7. Gently grasp any jammed paper in the ADF mechanism, and then pull the paper slowly but firmly upward to remove it.

  8. Close the ADF cover.

  9. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn on the printer.

If you have checked and removed any jammed paper from each printer area and the error persists, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Make sure the carriage can move freely

Make sure the carriage moves freely across the width of the printer.

  1. Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.

  2. Open the ink cartridge access door.

Image: The finger slot on the side of the printer.

  3. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you continue.

  4. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

       WARNING:

You must unplug the power cord to move the carriage by hand and reset the paper feed mechanism without the risk of electrical shock.

  5. Use a flashlight to check for any paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage, and then remove any paper or objects that you find.

       CAUTION:

If the paper tears when you remove it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the printer. If pieces of paper remain in the printer, more paper jams can occur.

  6. Reach inside the printer through the ink cartridge access door, and then manually move the carriage.

    • If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the printer, move the carriage to the left side of the printer.

    • If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the printer, move the carriage to the right side of the printer.

    • If the carriage is stuck in the middle of the printer, move the carriage to the right side of the printer.

  7. Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.

  8. Make sure the carriage can move freely across the width of the printer. Firmly push the carriage to the left side of the printer, and then push it to the right side.

  9. Close the ink cartridge access door.

  10. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn on the printer.

Try to print. If the error persists, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Clean the paper feed rollers

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. Clean the rollers inside the printer, and then try to print again.

  1. Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord.

       WARNING:

Disconnect the power cord before reaching inside the printer to avoid risk of injuries or electric shock.

  2. Press the two buttons at the ends of the duplexer, and then pull the duplexertowards you to remove it.

    Image: Remove the duplexer.

  3. Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.

  4. Press the cloth against the rollers inside the printer, and then rotate them upward with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

    Image: Clean the rollers

  5. Lightly dampen another lint-free cloth with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.

  6. Press the cloth against the external rollers, and then rotate them upward with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.

    Image: Duplexer external rollers.

  7. Press down on the two tabs at the ends of the duplexer to open the duplexer cover.

Image: Press the tabs to open the duplexer.

  8. Clean the rollers inside the duplexer the same way that you cleaned the other rollers.

    Image: Duplexer internal rollers.

  9. Allow the rollers to dry completely (approximately 10 minutes).

  10. Close the duplexer cover.

  11. Gently push the duplexer into the printer until it snaps firmly into place. Do not press the buttons on the end of the duplexer while you reattach it.

    Image: Reattach the duplexer.

  12. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn on the printer.

Try to print. If the error persists, continue to the next step.

Step 4: Reset the printer

Sometimes a paper jam error persists even though there is no jammed paper (false paper jam). Reset the printer, which might clear a false paper jam error, and then try to print again.

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  3. Wait 60 seconds.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

    NOTE:

HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
