HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer that has never given me any problems. A week ago, I received an error message with the magenta cartridge: "Supply system problem. Try replacing the cartridge with a different one, not an empty one." I replaced the magenta cartridge, but I got the same error message. I called HP support via chat, and after checking, they concluded that it might be a defective cartridge and sent me a new one. This morning, the new 953 XL magenta cartridge arrived. I installed it, but the error message still appears. What solution do you offer?

Hi @Giancarlo60,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating it must be to receive a replacement magenta cartridge only to see the same “Supply system problem” error again. You’ve done everything right so far, and I’m here to help you move forward with empathy and clarity.

Steps to Fix “Supply System Problem” on HP OfficeJet Pro 7740

This error usually relates to cartridge recognition, vent blockage, or printhead issues. Here's what HP officially recommends:

1. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it from the wall (not just the surge protector).
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

2. Clean the Cartridge Vent

  • Remove the magenta cartridge.
  • Check the vent hole (small circular opening on top).
  • Use a pin or paperclip to gently clear any glue residue or debris.
  • Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks.

3. Try a Full Cartridge Set

Sometimes, the error is triggered by an imbalance or miscommunication between cartridges.

  • Try replacing all cartridges with genuine HP ones if possible.
  • Make sure none are expired or refilled.

4. Reseat the Printhead

If your printer has a removable printhead:

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Look for a carriage latch.
  • Lift the latch, gently lift the printhead, reseat it, and wiggle slightly.
  • Close the latch and try printing again.

You can repeat this step up to three times if the error persists.

5. Check Firmware Updates

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
