I have used HP printers and scanners for almost 25 years in my business. Now working from home I purchased a HP OfficeJet Pro 8125e for my home office. It is very difficult. My computer and the remote printer are some ten feet a part. I never imagined that I would need to get up to adjust the settings on the printer to match my print instructions from the desktop. Example: I put a business envelope in the tray like I have for years. It took me twenty-five minutes before I learning that I needed to use the printer's tiny menu to tell it to print the envelope which my print task sent to the printer. So, cumbersome and what a waste of time. My efficiency is non-existent when I have to deal with the printer. This is just one example of how difficult it is. To turn the printer off, I must press the off button no less that five times as I wait for it to respond. Finally, I purchased this printer about three months ago and printed a total of 35 pages. Well, it's time to buy new ink cartridges. I never printed color, but they need to be replaced also. What a racket.[edited]

Hi @SWFloridaGuy,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your experience with the OfficeJet Pro 8125e has been frustrating, especially with envelope printing, menu prompts, slow power response, and ink usage. Let’s go through a few steps that can help simplify the way the printer behaves and reduce how often you need to touch the control panel.

Enable automatic paper-type detection when possible
– In HP Smart → Printer Settings → Advanced Settings → Paper Handling.
– Set the default paper type to “Automatic” so envelopes don’t require manual confirmation each time.

Save custom paper presets on the printer
– From the printer menu → Setup → Paper Setup → Create Custom Size.
– Saving a preset for envelopes lets the printer auto-select it when a job arrives.

Turn off “Tray Protection” or “Strict” paper handling
– In Advanced Settings → Paper Setup.
– This prevents the printer from asking for confirmation each time the paper type doesn’t match.

Update the printer’s firmware
– A slow or unresponsive power button is often improved by the latest firmware build.
– HP Smart → Printer Reports → Check for updates.

Set the printer to stay awake longer
– Go to Sleep Mode settings in HP Smart or the printer’s control panel.
– Increasing the sleep timer prevents delays when you press the power button or send a print job.

Disable “Ink Backup Mode” prompts
– In the printer’s maintenance menu, disable any prompts asking to confirm ink usage or mismatched cartridges.
– This lets you continue printing without interruption until the ink is truly empty.

I hope this helps.
