Hi Guys,

I have an HP OfficeJet pro 8600 Plus that has been working reliably for many years.  If there was ever an issue I would normally get an error code or plain language note that could resolve the problem.

I am primarily using a MacBook Pro with Mac OS Sonoma 14.4.1

I have been able to print/scan/etc. with no problems until yesterday, when I received the following message on my printer's screen:

PRINTER FAILURE

"There is a problem with the printer or ink system.  Turn printer off, then on.  If problem persists, contact HP.

There are no error codes.  I realize this is an older printer, but it works just fine (right up until an hour before this message).  I have turned off/on several times, no change.  I have disconnected from power supply, no change.  I cannot even get back to main screen on my printer.

As I've tried to go through HP's support pages, I've found that every time they ask for my Serial #, I get an 'please enter a valid serial number' response.  My serial # or my product # are not recognized as valid (I did get one acceptance of my product #, but then it dead-ends by asking serial #).

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Hi @mga44,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus is experiencing a significant hardware or ink system issue. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this problem.

Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect it from the power supply.
  • Remove the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Turn the printer back on.

Check Ink Cartridges and Printhead

  • Open the printer and check the ink cartridges. Make sure they are properly seated and there are no leaks.
  • If you have recently replaced any cartridges, try reinstalling them.
  • Remove and reseat the printhead if possible.
  • Clean the printhead and cartridges gently using a lint-free cloth if you notice any ink build-up.

Firmware Update

  • Ensure that the printer’s firmware is up to date. You can check for firmware updates on the HP support website and install them if needed. However, this will require access to the printer's menu, which might be difficult if it's stuck on the error screen.

Try a Partial Reset

  • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Wait for 30 seconds.
  • While holding down the # and 3 buttons on the printer's keypad, plug the power cord back in.
  • Keep holding the buttons until the printer turns on and displays a message on the screen.

If the # and 3 combination doesn't work, you can also try # and 6 for a more advanced reset, but be aware this might reset more settings.

Check for Mechanical Issues

  • Inspect the printer for any paper jams, obstructions, or other mechanical issues that might be causing the problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
