HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer

Following a semi-full reset, my HP OfficeJet Pro 8610  all-in-one now prompts to "install the cartridges that came with the printer" every time I power it on. I no longer have the original setup cartridges. How can I get my printer past message?

Hi @schnupp,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To bypass the "install the cartridges that came with the printer" message on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 after a semi-full reset, follow these steps.

Use Replacement Cartridges: If you have replacement cartridges that are compatible with your printer, try installing those. Make sure they are properly seated in their respective slots.

Check Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that the cartridges you are using are the correct model for your printer. HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 uses 950 and 951 series cartridges. Incompatible cartridges may cause this error.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and power it on.

Reset Printer to Factory Defaults: If you haven’t already done so, try performing a full factory reset:

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup (gear icon).
  • Navigate to Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset.

Update Firmware: Ensure that the printer’s firmware is up to date:

  • Go to the HP support website and download the latest firmware for your model.
  • Follow the instructions to update the printer’s firmware.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the issue and get your printer functioning properly again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for your response, @Alden4. I had already performed most of the steps you had recommended (replace cartridges, check cartridge compatibility, hard reset), and the printer was already on the most recent firmware release. It was impossible to reach the control panel to restore factory defaults as the printer would not progress beyond the prompt to install setup cartridges.

After much searching, I found this YouTube video which demonstrated the steps necessary to access the super-secret forbidden service menu from which I performed partial, semi, and full resets before I was finally able to avoid the prompt for setup cartridges.

However, I now have a new obstacle to overcome: the printer reports, "There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. If problem persists, contact HP." I have installed new compatible cartridges, yet the problem always returns at power up.

After providing years of reliable service, this printer has been a source of frustration for the past two weeks.

Thanks for your prompt reply. After my last post, I performed another hard reset. Now, the printer informs me of a cartridge problem: "One or more cartridges appear to be damaged. Remove them and replace them with new cartridges." (The yellow cartridge is indicated.) However, the cartridge that is currently inserted is new.

I replaced the new yellow cartridge with the previous cartridge, and the printer went through an alignment after (or during) which the printer then reports the cartridge problem again, but this time indicating both yellow (which is the old one I just put in for testing) and magenta (which I had previously inserted an old one). I replaced both with new cartridges that I had opened in the past few days of troubleshooting. The double cartridge problem reappeared, so I replaced the new cartridges with two different old aftermarket yellow and magenta cartridges. After more alignment, the error repeated again, so I replaced both those cartridges with two depleted OEM cartridges. More alignment, same error.

Once one problem is solved, the printer just seems to to another. *sigh*

Final update on the case: I reset the printer to factory defaults through the printer's control panel, which magically removed the print cartridge errors. Printer is back to normal (for now).
