HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am unable to print.  The printer recognizes that I have a print job.  It sounds as if it begins the printing process.  But it never prints the job.  I have run the Scan Doctor.  It claims there are no problems (except I have aftermarket print cartridges).  It confirms I have connectivity and communication.  When it tells me to print a test page, the printer begins the job, makes sounds as if it is beginning to print, but never prints.  I have tried clearing all print jobs, restarting computer and printer, asked it to update print apps from the printer itself (It tells me it cannot update printer apps at this time.  Try again later).  I tried removing and reinstalling printer.  I'm not sure what else to try

Hi @ValiantOne,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Since your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 seems to recognize jobs and start the printing process without completing it, let's troubleshoot further. Here are some steps that might help resolve the issue.

Power Reset the Printer

  • With the printer on, disconnect the power cable from the printer and from the wall outlet.
  • Wait about 60 seconds, then plug the printer directly back into the wall outlet (not a surge protector) and reconnect the power cable to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on and try printing again.

Check Ink Cartridges

  • Although the printer may still work with aftermarket cartridges, these can sometimes cause issues. Try removing and reinstalling the cartridges.
  • Check for any warnings or error messages related to cartridges on the printer's display.

Clear Print Spooler (on Windows)

  • On your computer, press Win + R and type services.msc.
  • Scroll down to Print Spooler, right-click it, and select Stop.
  • Then go to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete any files in this folder.
  • Go back to Services, right-click Print Spooler again, and select Start.
  • Try printing again.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Go to the HP Support website, search for the OfficeJet Pro 8710, and check if there’s a firmware update available for download. Updating firmware can sometimes resolve compatibility or functionality issues.

Use HP Smart App for Testing (if available)

  • Open the HP Smart app, select your printer, and try printing a test page directly from the app. The app may also provide additional diagnostic tools.

Change Printer Preferences

  • Open Devices and Printers (on Windows), right-click the OfficeJet Pro 8710, and select Printer Properties.
  • Go to the Advanced tab, select Print directly to the printer, and click Apply. This setting might bypass some issues with the print spooler.

Check Printer Queue and Restart Job

  • If there are still print jobs in the queue that are not responding, cancel all print jobs and restart the printer. Once clear, try to print a simple document to test if the issue is resolved.

Test with Different Applications

  • Try printing from a different application (e.g., a PDF reader or a web browser) to rule out any issues with specific software.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
