Hi there!

I own a Officejet 8600 plus, always bought original HP cartridges. I recently changed to new Y and C cartridges, but there was an error about one cartridge. I look at the „best before date“ and it was out of warranty even though I just purchased it.

So, bought new ones, replaced Y and C, after one printed page it said M was empty, so I changed that, too.

Now the printer‘s bombarding me with errors, saying the cartridges are damaged. It played around for a bit, putting in the old ones in between, restarting and so on. Same error, always for one or two different cartridges. Cleaned the contact/ platines of course.

Now here’s the thing: the printing head looks pretty messy (although printing quality was never a problem). I can’t contact HP because they don’t recognize my serial number. The printer worked perfectly for many years. Now with trying to make it work the cartridges are loosing so much ink.

I thought about buying a new head, but am afraid to loose more money.

Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Hi @Ggnfrg,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the cartridge error!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure all cartridges being used are compatible with the HP Officejet 8600 Plus. Check the cartridge model number against those recommended by HP.

Verify Authenticity: Make sure you’re using genuine HP cartridges. Non-HP cartridges can sometimes cause errors due to compatibility issues.

Inspect the Cartridges for Damage: Remove each cartridge and inspect them for any visible damage or leaks. If damaged, they should be replaced with new, genuine cartridges.

Check the Cartridge Contacts: Sometimes the problem lies in poor electrical contact:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove each cartridge.
  • Inspect the copper contacts on both the cartridge and printer for any debris or smudges.
  • Carefully clean these contacts with a lint-free cloth and a small amount of isopropyl alcohol.

Reinstall the Cartridges: After cleaning, reinstall the cartridges, ensuring they are securely snapped into place in their respective slots.

Reset the Printer:

  • Unplug the printer from the power source.
  • Wait for about 10 seconds before reconnecting.
  • Turn the printer back on.
  • This can help recalibrate and recognize the installed cartridges.

Run a Test Print: Attempt a test print to see if the issue persists. If the error continues, check the printer's display for specific error codes or messages.

Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure your printer’s firmware is up-to-date. Sometimes updates can resolve compatibility or operational issues with cartridges.

I hope this helps.

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus that is displaying an error message the one or more cartridges appear to be damaged in spite of the fact that all cartridges are new and all print heads and electrical contacts have been cleaned with a cleaning kit. The printer will not allow me to print a test page even after installing a new $57 magenta cartridge. Looks like this is the end of HP products for me!
