HP Officejet Pro 8600
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600. When I tried to install new cartridges, the printer gave an error saying they are incompatible. However, they are the correct ink, 950 Black and 951 C/M/Y.

To try and fix this, I did a partial reset through the support menu, but it did not work. Now the printer is stuck in a loop and won’t go to the main menu until ink is installed, which I can’t do because the new cartridges are “incompatible,” the old cartridges are depleted, and I don’t have the “original cartridges.” As a result, I can’t try a full reset or a firmware update or anything else since I can’t get to any menus.

Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the HP support community.

Clean the cartridge contacts

  1. Turn the printer on.

  2. Open the door to access to the cartridges.

  3. Wait until the carriage stops moving before you continue.

  4. Push in on the front of the cartridge indicated in the error message, and then remove it.

  5. Wipe the electrical contact on the cartridge with a lint-free cloth.

  6. Insert the cartridge into its color-coded slot until it snaps into place.

  7. Repeat these steps for any other cartridges indicated in the error message.

  8. Close the cartridge access door.
