I require assistance with my HP OfficeJet Pro 8620 printer.

I am attempting to replace the ink cartridges, but the cartridge carrier/carriage is not moving to the left when I open the access door, preventing me from removing or replacing the cartridges.

Could you please advise on the steps necessary to troubleshoot or manually move the carrier so I can perform the replacement?

Thank you for your help.

@Thembs, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

If the cartridge carrier on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8620 printer is not moving to the left when you open the access door, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Ensure the Printer is Turned On:

  • Check that the printer is powered on. If it's not responsive, press the power button to turn it on. Ensure the printer is fully operational before proceeding.

Close and Reopen the Access Door:

  • Sometimes, the printer might not detect that the access door is open. Close the access door firmly and then reopen it. This step can trigger the carriage to move.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back directly into a wall outlet (avoid using power strips to prevent power issues) and reconnect it to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and check if the carriage moves correctly.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Inspect the internal space for any paper jams or foreign objects that might be blocking the movement of the carriage.

Manual Carriage Movement (if necessary):

  • Important: Only attempt this if you can safely and gently move the carriage without forcing it, as this could cause damage.
  • With the power off, try gently sliding the carriage to the center of the printer. This should be done carefully and without applying excessive force.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the printer as well as from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet and the printer, and turn the printer back on.

Check Printer Software and Updates:

  • Make sure the printer firmware is up to date. Sometimes a software error can cause glitches in the hardware functioning.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
