Hi!  All of the sudden...about a week ago, I discovered this error message on my printer: 'Missing or Failed Printhead' - 'The printhead appears to be missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed.  Error Code: 0xc19a0003'.  I have tried all recommended fixes:  Cleaning the printhead with a cleaning solution kit; Installing new ink cartridges; Installing a new printhead; Turning the printer off and unplugging it and reseating the printhead 3 times.  Nothing has solved the issue.  Are there any other potential solutions to this short of buying a new printer?

Hi @JohnnyL64 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you've already tried most of the standard troubleshooting steps for the "Missing or Failed Printhead" error on your HP Officejet Pro 8630. Here are a few additional things you might consider:

  • Check for Firmware Updates: Sometimes, a firmware update can resolve hardware issues. Go to the HP support website and see if there’s an update available for your printer model.
  • Inspect the Printhead Contacts: Ensure that the contacts on both the printhead and inside the printer are clean and free of debris. Sometimes, even a small amount of residue can prevent proper detection.
  • Reset the Printer to Factory Settings: Although you’ve tried turning off and unplugging the printer, a full factory reset might help. This can usually be done through the printer’s menu under "Settings" or "Service."
  • Check the Printer’s Internal Connections: If you're comfortable doing so, you might carefully open the printer and check if there are any loose cables or connectors that could be affecting the printhead detection.
  • Test the Printhead in Another Printer: If you have access to another HP printer that uses the same printhead, you could test it in that printer to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is with the printhead or the printer itself.

Thanks so much for trying to help, Gaya.  I took all the steps you listed except #1 and #5.  I attempted to download the displayed firmware update for my printer, but I got an error message saying, 'page not found'.  Also, I couldn't try #5 because I don't have another printer.  This error message on my printer just popped up out of nowhere about a week ago.  Could it possibly be due to 'planned obsolescence' or simply that some of the printer's internal parts have worn out over time?  I hate thinking that the only solution from here is to get a new printer.

Gaya - the number you provided didn't work.  The system couldn't find my printer's serial number. I'm guessing it's because it's out of warranty.  The automated system advised me to go to hp.com/callme, which I did.  It shows my product as 'Expired'.  When I click on the product, I am not advanced through the system to have someone call me. Instead, I am thrown into an endless loop of error messages and 'we can't find the page you were looking for' notifications.  Not very customer friendly. If HP provides no customer support for products like mine any longer, why not just clearly spell out on your site/in your support messages that that is the case rather that have your customers endlessly wrangle with your system to try to find a solution?
