HP Officejet Pro6978 will not print black since upgrading to Mac OSX 10.15.6

Officejet Pro 6978
macOS 10.15 Catalina

Since upgrading last week to MacOSX 10.15.6 the printer will not print in black. I have followed every step in HP troubleshooting.  I have updated the software and firmware, cleaned the print heads several times, aligned them, and even changed a full black cartridge to a new one to see if the cartridge was defective.  I have even removed the printer from System Preferences and added it back twice. It will not print in black, either from the computer or from copying from the printer itself. Color jobs print and copy fine. It is just the black. And since there is no way to get anyone from HP to help I am asking the community.

@NSAdocNYC, Welcome to HP Support Community!

If you have already performed the steps from the document Black or Color Ink Not Printing, Other Print Quality Issues and the issue persists, it could be a hardware failure.

Please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.

Hope this helps!

I did all the steps in the article. I find it hard to believe that from one day to the next, just after making the upgrade to MacOSX Catalina that a perfectly good printer has hardware failure.  And the HP support site is useless because it won't let me proceed to speaking with anyone because the printer is out of warranty.

Since the device is out of warranty, and we've concluded that this is a hardware malfunction, I may have a few pointers/suggestions to help you out, however, since these suggestions are limited to you and your printer alone, I'd like to send out a private message with those details.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
