I have had this printer for many years. For the last few years if power is lost, when the power resumes, the printer gets hung during start-up when the ink toner carriage is initialized. Rather than checking the carriage briefly as it normally does, the carriage check repeats. When that happened, I would unplug the printer and press the power button a few times to clear any current left in the printer. I would then leave it unplugged for awhile. When I plugged the printer back in, it would restart normally.

All this changed recently when I sent a document to the printer and the display screen went blue with the message "cycle power." I unplugged the printer and when I plugged it back in it got hung during restart as it tends to do. Only this time I have not been able to get it to restart normally, no matter what I have tried.

I read a post that recommended pressing and holding the Cancel and OK buttons together while plugging the printer in. I tried this and got a blue screen with the message "deriv. cleared. power off. Again when I power of and back on, the printer gets hung in restart.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi @chainreaction,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your old printer that is not powering on.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, I'm here to help you today.

Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:

Power Cycle:

  • Unplug the printer from the power source.
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Plug the printer back in and try turning it on.

Reset to Factory Settings:

  • Since you've already tried the Cancel and OK button reset, you can also try resetting it to factory settings through the control panel, if possible. Look for a "Restore Factory Defaults" option in the menu.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Open the printer and check for any obstructions in the ink carriage path. Sometimes paper scraps or jammed parts can cause issues during startup.

Inspect Ink Cartridges:

  • Remove and reseat the ink cartridges. Ensure they are not clogged or damaged.

Remove Power Source Completely:

  • If you haven’t already, try leaving it unplugged for a longer period (at least an hour) before plugging it back in.

Try a Different Power Outlet:

  • Sometimes the issue can be with the power supply. Plug the printer into a different outlet or use a different power cord if available.

If none of the steps help in fixing the issue, there is an issue with the hardware.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day

Hi Irwin, thankyou for your comments, they have all been tried except the reset to factory conditions as the printer does not boot up, so I can't get into any menus. The printer remains with the egg timer on the little screen.

Hi @chainreaction,

I am sorry to hear that the above steps did not help much but i do appreciate your efforts in performing the troubleshooting steps.

It seems like an issue with the laptop hardware as you have exhausted all the possible troubleshooting steps to fix it. We appreciate your understanding and patience.
