I bought this printer but it doesn't work with my iMac. It's always in idle state and therefore it doesn't allow me to print.
it's connected via USB cable through a hub, since the iMac doesn't have USB ports.

Hi @StopBaizuo,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like there could be an issue with the connection or driver recognition on your iMac. Here are a few steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve the "idle status" and printing issue.

Check the USB Hub Connection

  • Direct Connection: Try connecting the printer directly to the iMac instead of using the USB hub. Some hubs may not provide enough power or proper data transmission, which could cause the printer to remain in an idle state.
  • Use a Different Cable: If the direct connection doesn't work, try using a different USB cable.

Ensure Correct Printer Driver

  • Install/Update Drivers: Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed on your iMac. You can download the latest drivers from the HP Support website. Follow the installation instructions carefully.
  • Use HP Smart: If you haven't done so already, download the HP Smart app from the Mac App Store. It can help with printer setup and troubleshooting.

Reset the Printing System

  • Reset the Printer Queue: Sometimes the printer queue can get stuck. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, right-click on your printer, and select Reset Printing System. After that, add your printer again and try printing.

Check Printer Status

  • Printer Display or Lights: Ensure that the printer is not showing any error messages or lights.
  • Try a Test Print: If the printer is connected and powered on, try printing a test page from the printer's control panel to check its status.

Mac OS Updates

  • Update MacOS: Ensure your iMac is running the latest macOS updates. Sometimes a system update can resolve compatibility issues with peripherals.

Check Printer Settings on the Mac

  • Printer Preferences: Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, and ensure the correct printer is selected as the default printer. Check for any pending jobs or errors in the print queue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
