My computer keeps sending and error message saying there was an error, but doesn't give an error message on the printer or what the error is. I have tried the HP smart app to auto fix and that doesnt work, ive unplugged and reset the printer and computer following instructions from the AI assistant, and i reset the printing spool, Nothing seems to be helping.

Hi @terskin
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
If your HP DeskJet Plus 4100 is showing a vague error on your computer but not on the printer itself, the issue may be tied to a corrupted driver, stalled print queue, or a miscommunication between the printer and Windows.
Let’s walk through a clean reset and reinstall process to restore smooth printing.
Step-by-step to resolve the DeskJet Plus 4100 error
Fully uninstall the printer software and drivers
- Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Uninstall anything listed as HP DeskJet Plus 4100, HP App, or HP Universal Print Driver.
- Open Device Manager > Printers and remove the printer if listed.
- Restart your computer.
Clear the print spooler again
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Scroll to Print Spooler, right-click and choose Stop.
- Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete all files inside.
- Go back to services.msc, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Start.
Download and install the latest full software package
- Visit the HP DeskJet Plus 4100 support page.
- Download the Full Software Solution under “Driver-Product Installation Software.”
- Install it with the printer powered on and connected via USB or Wi-Fi.
Use the HP App to re-add the printer
- Open the HP App and go to Add Printer.
- Follow the prompts to connect and register the printer.
- Run a test print from the app to confirm functionality.
Check Windows default printer settings
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & Scanners.
- Make sure your DeskJet Plus 4100 is set as the default printer.
- Disable “Let Windows manage my default printer” to prevent auto-switching.
Run HP Diagnose & Fix tool
- Download it from the HP Diagnose & Fix page.
- This tool performs deeper checks than the HP App and may resolve hidden conflicts.
Let me know how far you get with these steps.
Once the printer is reinstalled cleanly and the spooler is refreshed, the error should clear and printing should resume. I’ll stay with you until your DeskJet is reliably responding again.
