Following steps performed repeatedly over several days did not solve issue.  Now, searching for new printer!

 

1) unconnected and reconnected printer to two separate iMac USB ports

2) unplugged printer electric cable

3) restarted iMAC desktop

4) deleted all commands/print status in printer's print queue 

5) pressed  printer's on/off button repeatedly; during initial printer start up, printer's lights paused briefly when document print command was sent from iMAC, then began to blink repeatedly with no printing response.

Separately, I don't understand why the "operating System" choice available is "unknown OS."
