HP Officejet Pro 8600 plus
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

Prior Mac operating system, Big Sur and present system, 12.1, Monterey are both associated with this problem.  When I print the printer window "connecting to device" says "waiting for printer to become available."  The printer does not print.  If I restart the computer, then the job prints on restart.  Thanks in advance for any assistance.  Scanner works fine.  Copier works.

Welcome to the HP support community.

How is the printer connected?

Thanks for responding I really appreciate the help.  Printer had worked fine for years then all of a sudden, not.  USB cable with good connection. computer wifi is off.   Scanner works fine. I can print pages to look at print head functions for example.

Since posting my question, I tried the HP automated repair tool,  Again with this approach I reinstalled the printer, but this time I chose the Bonjour version of printers listed and added that, printer worked.  However a day later, once again the printer is not responding and the message is "waiting for printer to become available."  Checked System, printers and scanners and in the printer list was HP officeject pro 8600 "in use" and under that officejet pro 8600.  When I click on the latter in the location field of that window it says "kind" HP officejet pro 8600-air print.  If I delete the first version and try again the printer works.  I have two questions, what does air print refer to?  My computer wifi is off so I guess air print isn't referring to a wifi approach to computer-printer communication?  Second why was the system showing 2 versions of the printer when it didn't before and it was working again?  I have now selected the "air print" version of the printer as the default.  Maybe that will help going forward?

Thanks again.

AirPrint is an Apple technology that helps you create full-quality printed output without the need to download or install drivers.

If you are able to print using AirPrint, then continue using AirPrint.

If you need any further assistance, keep me posted.
