I have a HP officejet pro 8600 plus and I am looking to set it up after I change a cartridge (yellow). The printer’s panel said «  cartridge empty or damaged ». I put a new one (hp brand) in the printer, but the same message appear and the printer don’t work any more.

What can I do ?

Many thanks

Hi @Piere10,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is showing a "cartridge empty or damaged" message even after installing a new HP brand cartridge, you can try several troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue. Here’s a detailed guide to help you get your printer working again:

1. Verify Cartridge Installation

  • Remove and Reinstall: Turn off the printer, open the cartridge access door, and remove the yellow cartridge. Check for any protective tape or plastic that may still be on the cartridge, then reinstall it, ensuring it clicks into place securely.
  • Check Position: Make sure the cartridge is correctly seated and that it aligns with the contacts in the printer.

2. Inspect the Cartridge

  • Verify Compatibility: Ensure that the cartridge you are using is compatible with the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus and is the correct model number.
  • Check for Damage: Inspect the new cartridge for any signs of damage. If it appears damaged, try a different cartridge.

3. Clean Cartridge Contacts

  • Power Off: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Clean Contacts: Gently clean the contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol. Ensure everything is dry before reassembling.

4. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Update Firmware: Sometimes, firmware issues can cause problems with cartridge recognition. Check HP’s website for any available firmware updates for your model and follow the instructions to update.

5. Reset the Printer

  • Power Reset: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the wall outlet, wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

6. Run Printer Diagnostics

  • Built-in Diagnostics: Many HP printers have built-in diagnostic tools. Access these by going to the printer’s menu and looking for options like “Tools” or “Setup” and then selecting “Print Quality Report” or similar.

7. Check Printer Settings

  • Control Panel: On the printer’s control panel, navigate to the “Setup” menu, then “Printer Maintenance” or similar, and run any available diagnostic or maintenance routines.

8. Try a Different Cartridge

  • Test Cartridge: If you have another new yellow cartridge available, try replacing it with that one to rule out the possibility of a defective cartridge.

9. Verify Printhead Condition

  • Clean Printhead: The printhead might be clogged or dirty. Check the printer’s manual for instructions on how to clean the printhead, or use any cleaning options available in the printer’s software or menu.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
