Hi @daybyday69,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020e takes a long time to start printing after you power it on, but then prints normally after the first job. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.
Warm‑up and Initialization
When first powered on, the printer runs internal checks (printhead alignment, ink system priming, firmware loading).
This can cause a noticeable delay before the first print.
Update Printer Firmware
Use the HP Smart app or the printer’s control panel to check for firmware updates.
Updates often reduce startup delays and improve print responsiveness.
Disable Automatic Maintenance
In the printer menu, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance.
If “Automatic Printhead Cleaning” or “Alignment on Startup” is enabled, turn it off.
This prevents extra delay when the printer first wakes up.
Assign a Static IP Address
If printing over Wi‑Fi, the delay may be caused by the printer searching for a new IP each time.
Set a static IP in the Embedded Web Server (type the printer’s IP in a browser).
This ensures faster connection from the PC.
Check Driver Settings
On your PC, open Devices and Printers > HP OfficeJet Pro 8020e > Printer Properties.
Make sure the correct driver is installed (not “Generic”).
Using the full HP driver package improves print start times.
Keep Printer in Sleep Mode Instead of Powering Off
Instead of shutting down completely, let the printer go into sleep mode.
Waking from sleep is much faster than a full startup cycle.
I hope this helps.
