Printer wouldn't print, said I was "offline", I turned it off for 30 seconds, then turned on again and the message of "artridge failure" and the magenta cartridge was showing as damaged so I replaced it.  Now says "printer failure...problem with printer or ink system".  I can't figure out what's wrong or what to do.

Hi @nanabug7,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating printer issue. When you're encountering "cartridge failure" or "printer failure" messages, it can be due to a few different reasons. Here are some steps to troubleshoot the problem.

Restart the Printer

It's good that you've already restarted the printer once, but let's try it again just to make sure.

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for about 2-3 minutes.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and then the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and see if the error message persists.

Check for Firmware Updates

Sometimes firmware updates can resolve such issues. Here's how to check for updates:

  • Go to the HP Support website.
  • Enter your printer model.
  • Look for firmware updates for your printer and follow the instructions to update.

Clean Cartridge Contacts

If the cartridge was recently replaced, it's possible that there's some residue or dirt on the contacts. Here's how to clean them:

  • Remove the new magenta cartridge.
  • Turn off the printer.
  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge.
  • Allow the contacts to dry completely.
  • Reinstall the cartridge and turn on the printer.

Reset the Printer

Performing a reset can often clear out errors. The method can vary by model, but here's a general way to do it:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on and check if the error is gone.

Additional Tips:

  • Make sure you're using genuine HP ink cartridges. Counterfeit or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause these issues.
  • Check for any visible damage inside the printer, like paper jams or foreign objects, that could be causing the problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
