HP1020 Laserjet printer stopped working over a month ago, when I tried to restore the drivers and reconnect it was not visible in my printer devices list.  Nothing works to make it usable.  I changed cables, printer, even computers and nothing works so I can use it.  I don't get why a printer connected to a USB cable suddenly stops working and can't be reconfigured.

HI @TBeau,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing a persistent issue with your HP LaserJet 1020 printer not being recognized by your computer. Here are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

1. Check Physical Connections

  • Make sure the printer is powered on and there are no error lights or messages on the printer.
  • Plug the printer into a different USB port on your computer. Sometimes ports can fail or have issues.
  • Even though you've already tried changing cables, it's worth trying another one to rule out a faulty cable.

2. Uninstall Old Drivers and Reinstall

Uninstall Existing Drivers:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.Find your HP LaserJet 1020 (if it's listed), right-click it, and select Remove device.
  • Go to Device Manager (press Win + X and select Device Manager), expand Printers or Universal Serial Bus controllers, and uninstall any instances of the HP LaserJet 1020.

Download the Latest Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for the HP LaserJet 1020.

Install the Latest Drivers:

  • Run the downloaded driver installation file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the drivers.
  • Connect the printer to your computer when prompted during the installation process.

3. Check USB Controllers in Device Manager

Open Device Manager:

  • Press Win + X and select Device Manager.

Check USB Controllers:

  • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.Right-click each USB Root Hub or Generic USB Hub and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.

Restart Your Computer:

  • After updating the USB controllers, restart your computer and try connecting the printer again.

4. Run Windows Troubleshooter

Open Troubleshooter:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
