Hi @MK279,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The E0 error on your HP DeskJet 2722 indicates an issue with the cartridge setup, which could be due to a miscommunication between the printer and the cartridge. Since replacing the cartridge hasn’t resolved it, let’s try a few steps to re-establish proper functionality.
Reset the Printer:
- With the printer on, unplug it from the power source.
- Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
- This resets internal components and can often help clear errors.
Check the Cartridge Contacts:
- Open the cartridge access area and remove the color cartridge.
- Inspect the copper contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer for any dust or ink buildup. Gently clean both with a lint-free cloth.
- Reinsert the cartridge securely.
Run the Cartridge Alignment:
- Go to the HP Smart app, open “Printer Maintenance,” and try running a cartridge alignment. This can sometimes reinitialize communication.
Use HP’s Diagnostic Tools:
- Within the HP Smart app, look for a diagnostic option or “Print Quality Tools” under the printer’s settings. Running these tests may prompt the app to recognize the cartridge and complete the setup.
Remove and Reinstall the HP Smart App:
- Sometimes, the app can hold onto an old error code. Uninstall and reinstall the HP Smart app to clear cached data and refresh its connection to the printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden4,
Thanks for your reply! I tried steps suggested by you, I successfully completed Reset the Printer and Check the Cartridge Contacts but for other steps it is asking for PIN. I tried to enter the PIN from the label but it says PIN is invalid. I tried multiple time same and correct PIN but it is not working. Also, I tried to uninstall and reinstall the smart app but still getting the same PIN invalid error. On the printer initially it is showing Color ink error E0 but if i restart the printer it goes away. On the smart app I can see my printer but it says complete the setup using Setup cartridge which of course I do not have as this printer is old so those setup cartridge I used a couple of years ago when first time i used this printer.
I am kind of stuck at this point not sure what to do. I tried with brand new cartridge also but no luck.
Looking forward for your help and support.
Thanks

Hi @MK279,
Thank you for your response,
Since you're using regular cartridges now, there are a few ways to get around this issue.
Bypass Setup Cartridge Requirement: Sometimes, resetting the printer to factory settings can trigger the printer to accept standard cartridges instead of requiring setup ones. Here's how you can try a full reset:
- Turn off the printer and disconnect it from power for about two minutes.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
- Once it powers on, check if it will allow you to complete the setup without needing the setup cartridges.
Update Printer Firmware: If you can access any settings on the printer through the HP Smart App or a direct browser connection, updating the firmware can also sometimes resolve these cartridge recognition issues. Firmware updates help eliminate bugs related to cartridge recognition.
Troubleshooting Ink Cartridge Error (E0): Since you're seeing the “E0” error intermittently, it could help to:
- Clean the electrical contacts on the new cartridge again.
- Make sure the cartridge is fully seated in its slot.
- Check for any leftover tape or debris that might be preventing the cartridge from making proper contact.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
