HP5740 - Won't Print Black Ink

macOS 11.0 Big Sur

My printer all of a sudden stopped printing black ink. This happened immediately after I was forced to update my printer software since the software stopped working with Mac Big Sur (it now does). What I have tried:

 

- My ink cartridges have more than enough ink

- I followed another thread and followed the recommendations: I have printed multiple rounds of printer maintenance sheets, the color prints just fine but the black ink does not.

- I tried physically cleaning the ink cartridges, also as recommended on another thread.

- I followed up with the link provided in another thread to discuss with HP support. I was told since my printer is now about 8 years old, and therefore without warranty, it does not qualify for anything other than asking a question on this forum.

 

I'm out of ideas and extremely frustrated. Is there any other way to fix this issue? Thank you!

@KristinA14, Welcome to HP Support Community!

 

If you have already performed the steps from the document No black ink, wrong colors, other print quality issues, and the issue persists, it could be a hardware failure.

 

Since the device is out of warranty, and we've concluded that this is a hardware malfunction, I may have a few pointers/suggestions to help you out, however, since these suggestions are limited to you and your printer alone, I'd like to send out a private message with those details.
