Hi @GNellist,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you have a new and verified HP 902XL black cartridge with a 2020 date and it's not working in your HP 6958 printer, there could be several reasons for this issue.

  • Compatibility Issue: Check if the cartridge is compatible with your HP 6958 printer model. Even though it's the correct cartridge number, sometimes there are slight variations that might cause compatibility issues.
  • Installation Error: Ensure that the cartridge is properly installed. Sometimes improper installation can prevent the cartridge from being recognized by the printer.
  • Dirty Contacts: Check the electrical contacts on both the cartridge and the printer. If they are dirty or dusty, it may prevent proper communication between the cartridge and the printer. Clean them gently with a lint-free cloth or alcohol swab.
  • Firmware Update: Sometimes printers receive firmware updates that can affect the compatibility with third-party cartridges. Make sure your printer's firmware is up to date.
  • Defective Cartridge: Although it's new, there's still a possibility that the cartridge is defective. Try installing it in another compatible printer to see if it works there.
  • Printer Issue: If none of the above solutions work, there might be an issue with the printer itself.

Troubleshooting printer cartridge issues can sometimes be frustrating, but hopefully, one of these solutions will resolve the problem for you!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
