OK, this printer fails to remain connected to my network.  Both normal wireless connections and bonjour service connections are sporadic.  The only way I can connect is to either reinstall the printer or turn off my network / printer and turn them back on.  I have gone through all of the network diagnitics and not have resulted in a successsful resolution.  What does it take to install this printer and have it remain connected with bonjour services (to allow me airprint and wireless scan).  I have a good wrt3200acm AND an re7000 wireless extender installed with the same SSID.  These items are working well with not issues for any of my other wireless devices (canon printer, pc's, tablets, phones, TIVO, etc.

This printer is about to be scrapped and replace (with a non HP printer) if this cannot be resolved.

Any suggestions?

Hi! @millewg, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!

I understand you have issues connecting your printer to the network.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

As you mentioned you have issues connecting your printer to the new network.

Please try few steps recommended below.

Restart the computer, printer, and router to resolve any network or communication error states.

   NOTE:

The following steps temporarily disconnect network and Internet connections, and require restarting your computer. Complete any tasks or downloads in progress before continuing.

  1. Disconnect the power cord from the router.

  2. Turn off the printer.

  3. Close all running programs on your computer, including the HP software installation window, then shut down the computer.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to the router, then wait for the Internet activity light to display a normal connected status.

  5. Turn on the printer.

  6. Turn on the computer.

  7. Try installing the HP software again.

Also, try the steps recommended below.

Delete the existing print queue and add the printer

Remove the printer queue from the list of printers, and then add it again. Doing so creates a new printing session.

  1. Make sure your Mac is connected to the Internet.

  2. In the Printers list, click your HP printer, and then click the Minus button  to delete it.

  3. Click the Add button .

  4. Find and select the name of your printer from the Printer list, and then click Add to add your printer. Do not select an HP Fax driver.

       NOTE:

If your printer does not display in the list, make sure the printer is connected, turned on, has power, and is ready to print.

Figure : Example of the printer selection list

Image: The Add window showing a selection of printers with one model selected.
  5. Click Print Using or Use.

  6. Select AirPrint or secure AirPrint from the list.

Your new printer queue displays in the Printers list in an Idle status .

  7. Try printing again.

If the issue still persists try resetting the MAC print system and check if it helps.

Try resetting the print system on your MAC and check if it helps.

• Click the Apple menu icon, and then click “System Preferences”.

• Click “Printers and Scanner” / “Print and Scan” or “Print and Fax”.

• Right-click the blank space in the Printers list, and then click “Reset printing system”.

• Click “Reset” in the confirmation window.

• Enter an administrator username and password, and then click “OK”.

• Wait until the printing system is reset and no devices show in the Printers list

• Restart your computer and then go back to System preferences – Printers and scanners.

• Click the “Add button” (+).

• Find, and then select the name of your printer from the printer list, and then click “Add” to add your printer. Do not select an HP Fax driver.

Click “Print Using...” or “Use”, and then select Secure AirPrint or AirPrint.

These solutions have not worked.  It is incredibly fustrating to not have a stable connection AND to not be able to diagnose why.  I will try to provide the following additional details.  Maybe someone an help.  I have a wrt3200acm / RE7000 networking installed.  The RE7000 is installed in AP mode and direct attached to my wrt3200acm via a ethernet cable.  Both routers/extenders have the same SSID and NO OTHER DEVICES have a problem with this configuration.  Currently Ihave deleted all HP printers and used HP Easy Startup to install.  THe only printer that shows up with MacOS System Preference is "HP Officejet Pro 8620" and it is also available in HP Utilities.  It is NOT cabable of either airprint or wireless scan because BonJour services are not available.  HP Utility, however indicates BonJour services are on and available (HP Officejet Pro 8620 [5EB596] (2)).  This printer does not show up in MacOS system preferences.

Also, there is a second printer installed (HP5EB596) according to HP Utility and it too has bonjour services turned on.  It is NOT available in MacOS System Preferences.   If I were to restart my RE7000 then the Bonjour printer most often (not always) shows as installed and available.  It is this printer connection that is unreliable and will often disappear requiring a restart of the printer and the RE7000.  Ii have tried all of the recommended resolutions tips.  The one I thought most promising was assigning a static IP address but that did not work  I have a cannon printer also assigned with a static IP address and that does work but it also worked with DHCP turned on.   This printer has steady access to my household through either the Mac's or through Airprint for my iPhones/iPads.

WHAT MUST I DO TO MAKE THE HP862O WORK PROPERLY (IE AIRPRINT IS ON AND STEADY, WIRELESS SCAN IS ON AND STEADY).   This has been a constand problem with this device.  It is not a prolbem with my Canon, it was not a problem with an older HP7200 series printer.

Without a resolution it is my intent to cancel my instant ink and scrap this printer.  That is a shame because the printer itself works great, when is is properly connected.

I have screen images I can send of the above but not sure how to upload the images.

PS, this is not a new network (as implied in your message) and there are no changes to the printer.

I tried once again resetting the MacOS print system.  As before, I am able to re install my canon, Neat Scan, and Epson Perfection Scanner.  I cannot readd the HP printer and will need to reinstall the printer.

@millewg, Thanks for your quick response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

As you mentioned the issue still persists after trying out the steps.

Have you tried connecting to the router directly without the extenders? Does the issue persist?

Is the printer working directly with Wi-Fi direct connection?

Try running the wireless guided troubleshooter and checks if it helps. LInk: http://hp.care/2FECZQI

Refer the document to know more information about printing using Wi-Fi direct. Link: http://hp.care/2FC5iiX

If the Wi-Fi direct printing works correctly, it is an issue with your network or the router settings.

Please contact your internet service provider for connection settings.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Take Care! 🙂

I have the same problem.  I can see other routers in my area but cannot find the router a couple of rooms down the hall.  If I reboot the router and the printer it will find my router long enough to connect.  It will work for a day maybe then drop the network again.  When I use the wireless wizard it cannot find the router down the hall but will find routers all over the neighbor hood.  The signal from the router is not the issue as I have various devices all over the house that can connect and stream from this router.  I would suspect a firmware update has caused this issue and should be fixed by HP support.

S0rry, this issue has been resolved for quite some time.    I did several things to stabilize my network connection.  1)  I added an extender to my network to improve overall coverage, though this did not directly help with this problem.  2) I separated my networks to 2.4 and 5.1 and started to connect devices to these individual networks, including my printer.  3) I optimized each of the network bands.  4) I assigned a specific ip address to my printer rather than relying on dynamic ip addressing.  Once all of these action were complete I ceased to have issues with connecting my HP (and other) printers / scanners to my network.

Sorry, I also needed to delete and readd all my HP devices eliminating duplicates.  I did not need to do any firmware updates to the printer.
