HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 printed half of a job this afternoon and just stopped.  Now it will not print new jobs.  It will not copy.  It will scan to Scan&Capture, and it will print the Printer Status Report from the menu.  Print jobs just sit for a while and eventually say "Printer Error".  The "Jobs" display on the printer shows "Printing", which shows indefinitely, until I cancel.  (Similarly, when I try "copying", it says "Copying" indefinitely, until I cancel.

I have turned the printer off & on (with power cable disconnect); I have done that combined with rebooting the computer, turning off the Print Spooler and clearing the printer spool folder.  I have opened all the doors that could be opened and see no issues with paper jams or ink cartridges.

HP Smart diagnostic tool says "Print jobs in queue issue fixed", but it is not. At one point I did see a string of 74899 events, but I cannot get back to the error event log; it now says errors are cleared and the printer event log only shows network and ink cartridge status messages.

Anything else to try?

I read this post https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printing-Errors-or-Lights-Stuck-Print-Jobs/Printer-can-scan-and-print-... which pretty much described my problem.  The user got the standard "hard set, reload firmware" advice (which didn't work); the user eventually ran out of ink doing maintenance tasks like cleaning print heads, replaced his cartridges, and resolved the problem.

Replacing the ink cartridges resolved my problem as well.

Seems like the printer software should be smart and friendly enough to tell you that.

Hi Jelion.

I can confirm that I had a similar problem.  My device would not copy, nor print, but showed that it was doing so and reported no errors.  I had to cancel the jobs which were not printing, despite the printer saying it was printing them.  Diagnostics reported no problems.  Firmware was reported as up to date.

Having read your post, and the one which you refer to, I deduced that my yellow print cartridge was empty.  Installing a replacement cartridge resolved the problem.

Thanks very much for your post, as it saved me from junking the device as I was starting to assume there was an unrecoverable hardware failure.
