HP ENVY 6455e All-in-One Printer
macOS 10.14 Mojave

Hi there, my HP Envy 6455E has stopped printing in black and when I print it just creates a blank page.  The black ink supply is low but it does not say it's time to replace the cartridge.  The strange part is that when I ask to run a test page, it printed a full test page in color and black as well.  I don't understand why it can print a test page but no black ink is showing on any of my other print jobs.  This is new as of today and never before experienced by me.  I do you the printer relatively infrequently.  Thanks for your help!  I need to print for my job so this is problematic.

Hi @GigiRD,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like there might be a clog or some other issue with the black ink cartridge or the print head. Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the problem.

  • Check Ink Levels: Even if the printer hasn't indicated that it's time to replace the cartridge, if the black ink supply is low, it might not be able to print properly. Try replacing the black ink cartridge with a new one and see if that resolves the issue.
  • Clean Print Head: Sometimes, the print head can get clogged with dried ink, especially if the printer isn't used frequently. Most printers have a built-in utility for cleaning the print head. You can usually find this option in the printer's settings menu. Run the print head cleaning utility and see if that helps.
  • Manual Cleaning: If the built-in cleaning utility doesn't solve the problem, you can try manually cleaning the print head. This involves removing the ink cartridges and gently wiping the print head with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water. Be careful not to touch the electrical contacts or nozzles on the cartridges.
  • Check Print Settings: Make sure that the print settings in your print jobs are configured to use black ink. Sometimes, print jobs can default to color, especially if they contain images or other graphics. Check the print settings in the application you're printing from and ensure that black ink is selected.
  • Update Printer Drivers: Outdated or corrupt printer drivers can sometimes cause printing issues. Make sure that your printer drivers are up to date. You can usually download the latest drivers from the HP website.
  • Restart Printer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary issues. Turn off the printer, unplug it from power, wait a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on again.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it's possible that there's a more serious hardware problem with the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
