can I set the default print mode to Draft and Grayscale.? I don't see an option for this and it's so expensive to be printing in black only and using all the color cartridges

@snowwhite5810,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To reduce toner consumption on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw, you can set the printer to default to Draft mode and Grayscale printing, ensuring it primarily uses the black toner cartridge. Here's how to adjust these settings.

Setting Draft Mode as Default:

Draft mode prints at a lower quality, conserving toner.

Access Printer Preferences:

  • On your computer, navigate to the Control Panel.
  • Select "Devices and Printers" or "Printers & Scanners," depending on your operating system.
  • Locate your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw printer, right-click on it, and choose "Printing Preferences."

Enable EconoMode (Draft Mode):

  • Within the Printing Preferences window, go to the "Paper/Quality" or "Quality" tab.
  • Look for a setting labeled "EconoMode," "Draft," or "Toner Save."
  • Check the box to enable this feature.
  • Click "Apply" or "OK" to save the changes.

Note: If you don't see the EconoMode option, ensure you have the latest HP Universal Print Driver installed, as it provides additional settings like EconoMode.

Setting Grayscale as Default:

Setting the printer to Grayscale ensures it uses only the black toner for printing.

Access Printer Preferences:

  • Follow the same steps as above to open the "Printing Preferences" window for your printer.

Set to Grayscale:

  • Navigate to the "Color" or "Color Options" tab.
  • Select "Print in Grayscale" or "Black & White."
  • If available, choose "Black Ink Only" to ensure only the black cartridge is used.
  • Click "Apply" or "OK" to confirm the changes.

Note: Some printers might not allow printing if any toner cartridge is empty, even when set to Grayscale. This behavior is designed to prevent potential damage to the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
