Hi @Chatham_Brew,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating it is when your HP Color LaserJet Pro 3201dw printer shows a “Cartridge Memory Missing” error for the Magenta and Yellow cartridges, especially after trying all the usual fixes. Let’s go over the most effective steps based on HP’s official guidance and community experience.

Fix: Cartridge Memory Missing (Magenta & Yellow) – HP Color LaserJet Pro 3201dw

1. Remove and Reinstall the Affected Cartridges

  • Open the front door of the printer.
  • Carefully remove the Magenta and Yellow toner cartridges.
  • Inspect the gold contact chip on each cartridge, make sure it’s clean and undamaged.
  • Reinsert the cartridges firmly until they click into place.
  • Close the front door and check if the error clears.

2. Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer completely.
  • Unplug it from the wall for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power it on.
  • This can reset the cartridge memory check.

3. Verify Cartridge Authenticity

  • HP anti-counterfeit | HP® Official Site
  • Enter the serial number from the security label on the cartridge.
  • HP printers may reject cartridges with:
    • Non-HP chips
    • Modified or remanufactured circuitry

⚠️ Even if a non-HP cartridge worked before, firmware updates can block them later.

4. Try Swapping Cartridges (if available)

  • If you have access to another set of genuine HP 216A or 216X cartridges, try swapping them to isolate whether the issue is with the printer or the cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Vikram the great,

I have tried all 4 of those fixes. And none of them have helped solve the problem of Cartridge Memory Missing error. Not sure what else to do

Are these OEM or 3rd party cartridges? If 3rd party, then likely the vendor has not equipped the cartridge with a compliant chip.
