Printer just started to print in “single cartridge mode”. Not color and B/W cartridges are proper installed and almost new. Why did this just start for me good reason?

Hi @JCEJR,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

If your HP OfficeJet 4650 has suddenly started printing in Single Cartridge Mode, despite both cartridges being properly installed, here are a few steps to resolve the issue:

1. Check Printer Display for Errors

  • If there’s a message like “Single Cartridge Mode”, it might indicate the printer isn't detecting one of the cartridges correctly.

2. Restart the Printer

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges

3. Disable Single Cartridge Mode (If Manually Enabled)

  • On the printer display, navigate to:
    • Setup > Preferences > Single Cartridge Mode
    • If there is an option to Disable, select it.

4. Update Printer Firmware

  • Refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware

5. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows)

  • Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor to detect and fix issues.
