Hi - my printer regularly stops in the middle of printing a page saying there is a paper jam. There is no paper jam. The rollers are clean, the paper is standard 80gsm white printer paper everything is as it should be.
I have printed a self test report after looking at advice on the HP website about printer jams but have no idea what it tells me or what I should do with it.
I have just successfully printed a signle page document without the jam message since printing the self test report but I am certain it will tell me there's an imaginary jam again soon.

Hi @RupertFrizHill,
I reviewed the post. Thanks for the quick reply. I was away on my weekend. (not a Saturday or Sunday). You've done commendably well. You've displayed superb technical competence, immense patience and a splendid temperament to try and get the issue resolved. Kudos to you for a job well done.:)
At least we have figured out as a team that the printer's hardware could be faulty. Great effort from your end. .It has been an absolute honor sharing this platform with you and a fabulous experience. Trust me I've done all I can to assist you here by keeping your best interest in mind. I genuinely hope the replacement product works great, stays healthy for a long time and the issue gets resolved without hassles.
The fast draft is working as the printer may be on its last legs. if it does not copy, then it is very clear that the hardware is faulty. Hope this answers your question.
Let me know how it goes. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care and have a super year ahead and stay healthy. 🙂
Cheers!

Hi @RupertFrizHill,
Thanks for stopping by the HP community. A very good day to you. I reviewed the post regarding assistance with paper jam errors. I will be delighted to assist you here. Superb description and stupendous diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that.
For better clarity and to assist you better I would require information regarding this:
- Did you try a root level uninstall and reinstallation of the printer software?
- Did you try a hard reset on the printer?
- Did you try making copies directly from the printer to check if it works correctly?
For now please try these steps:
Please make 3 copies directly from the printer without any communication from the computer.
If it copies fine then uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers by following these steps:
- Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
- Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
- Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
- Click on print server properties.
- You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there if any.
- Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
- Restart the PC.
- Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
- Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
- It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).
- If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
- Ignore the Regedit option if it cannot be done.
- Restart the PC again.
Then download the latest full feature driver from here http://hp.care/2x9cn5R and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.
Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.
This should do the trick for you.
- If it does not work, then please install the Windows built-in drivers by following the instructions from this link: http://hp.care/2o3acvH and this should do the trick for you.
For scanning issues please try these links:
- HP scan and capture link: http://hp.care/2fAFYxE helps you to download install and use the app with FAQs
- HP Smart app link: http://hp.care/2hmgdBr helps you to download install and use the app with FAQs
If the problem continues, please contact HP phone support to replace the printer as the printer may be faulty. Before that please try the steps from this document http://hp.care/2vJnQIV for jam related issues
HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://hp.care/2r9wSvP
- Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
- Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
- Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
- Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.
They will be happy to assist you immediately. If the unit is under warranty repair services is taken care of by the manufacturer’s warranty
Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat.
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.

Many thanks David. The last thing I tried was a simple copy but this stopped printing with a 'paper jam' message too. Oh, one other thing I did after was to try forcing the paper through more quickly so I tried printing a fast draft and this seemed to work well with no jams.
However, as we had a lot of printing to do on Monday, we threw the towel in and bought a new HP Envy 5540.
Thanks for your help.
But before I close this, is the success of printing fast drafts and pointer at what the problem might be?
