Hello,

I have an HP envy 4520 printer. It was working fine and printing without any issues. I did a recent update and I noticed these issues became a problem after the update.

A single page of a  three-word sentence will take 30- 45 minutes to print now.

I have done various steps to try to resolve this issue. Such as removing the power cable, rebooting it, removing the software and reinstalling it. I also cleared the current firmware that was installed from the hidden "support menu and engineer menu"
And then try to reinstall it but the problem still remains an issue.

Upon doing an investigation for the reason for it taking so long, I noticed that my serial number had changed by itself.
While trying to use the Enegenging Menu > Manufactures  Menu option. I am not able to erase the unwanted numbers that have been added to my printer's new S/N from the S/N Menu Tab

I tried to look up solutions/ways already to restore my original serial number which is printed on the label. However, I am having some difficulties trying to locate a simple solution to restore my serial number back to its original state.

I was able to locate another option by a pjl command to use with a FTP command line prompt. But to be honest that's a little too difficult to deal with as it is not working and failing  from the steps listed here:  https://thommck.wordpress.com/2013/03/19/resetting-an-hp-laserjets-serial-number-send-a-pjl-command-...

Any ideas of what I can do to fix this for a simpler way.

Please any help would be awesome so I can restore my printer back to its default state.

Hi @Doug7827,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing a very unusual issue with your HP Envy 4520 printer, especially with the serial number changing following an update. This is not a common occurrence and could potentially indicate a deeper firmware or hardware problem. Let’s go through some steps that might help resolve or further diagnose the issue:

Firmware Reinstallation:

  • Since you've already tried clearing and reinstalling the firmware, it might be worthwhile to attempt it again but ensure you're using the most recent and correct firmware version directly from HP’s official website. Firmware issues, especially after an update, can sometimes cause unexpected behaviors including operational delays like you’re experiencing.

Restoring Serial Number:

  • Changing the serial number through the printer's menus (like the Engineering Menu) is not typically recommended unless guided by professional support because it can lead to warranty and support issues, or further software problems. Since you mentioned using a PJL command with an FTP command line, this suggests you are comfortable with more advanced fixes. However, I would advise against trying to manually change the serial number without professional guidance.
  • If this printer is still under warranty or support, contact HP support directly. Explain the situation and provide them with both the original and the changed serial numbers. They might be able to offer a solution to restore the serial number officially or diagnose why this change occurred.

Check Connection Speed and Printer Settings:

  • Although the slow printing issue might be related to the firmware or serial number issue, it's also a good idea to check your printer’s connection to your network or computer. If connected via Wi-Fi, try a direct USB connection to see if there is any improvement.
  • Check the print settings on your computer to ensure they’re set to normal printing and not a high-quality mode that takes longer to process.

HP Diagnostic Tools:

  • Use HP’s official diagnostic tools which can be found on their website or within the HP Smart app. These tools can often identify and help fix issues with printing or hardware errors.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel571!

Thank you thank you for the follow up response back and troubleshooting tips I can try! 🙂

I shall see about following up with an HP support professorial to see if they are able to assist further.    I was able to try the: Firmware Re-installation, checked the HP Diagnostic Tools and I have done the "Check Connection Speed and Printer Settings" test .  However, they were of no success for me.

Once again thank you for tips!

Cheers,

Doug.H
