I have a HP ENVY 4513 all in one printer I have had it for a few years, printed from it 1 time then I did not bother with it till now I would like to start using it again. when I did it said " incompatible cartridge " I put a new cartridge in, it is the correct cartridge.  I am realizing I need to update the print firmware. I have not been updating the printer (did not realize I had to) I need help as to where I go to update the printer and the firmware.  I spent 3 hrs the other day trying to figure this out.  Any help would be appreciated.

I understand how frustrating this must feel—you’ve done the right thing by installing the correct cartridge, yet the printer still shows “incompatible cartridge.” Since the printer hasn’t been updated for a while, refreshing the firmware is a smart next step to restore compatibility and get it working again.

 

Step 1: Prepare the printer

  • Make sure the printer is powered on and connected to your computer via USB or Wi‑Fi.
  • Ensure the cartridges are seated firmly and the access door is closed.

 

Step 2: Download the latest firmware

  • Go to the official HP driver and firmware page:
    HP Software and Driver Downloads
  • Enter HP ENVY 4513 in the product search box.
  • Select your operating system (Windows 10 or Windows 11).
  • Under Firmware, download the latest update package.

 

Step 3: Install the firmware

  • Run the downloaded file on your computer.
  • Follow the on‑screen instructions to update the printer firmware.
  • Do not turn off the printer or disconnect cables during the update.
  • Once complete, restart the printer.

 

Step 4: Verify cartridge recognition

  • After the firmware update, check the printer display.
  • If the cartridge is recognized, print a test page from the HP App or directly from the printer’s control panel.
  • If the error persists, remove and reseat the cartridge once more.

 

Step 5: Keep firmware current

  • Open the HP App on your computer or mobile device.
  • Go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Printer Update.
  • Enable automatic updates so the printer stays aligned with cartridge compatibility in the future.

By updating the firmware, you give the printer the ability to properly communicate with newer cartridges. Once refreshed, your HP ENVY 4513 should accept the cartridge and be ready to print again.
