Please help. How can I fix the “door open” issue on the Smart Tank 580? The printer is properly closed, but the “!” sign keeps showing on the printer, and the HP app says the door is open.

Hi @Budz21,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating that “door open” error can be, especially when the printer is clearly closed and you just want to get back to printing. Let’s go through the most effective steps to resolve this on your HP Smart Tank 580:

Why This Happens

  • The door sensor isn’t detecting closure properly.
  • A misaligned printhead access door or debris near the sensor.
  • Firmware glitch causing a false error.

Step 1: Power Reset

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the rear and the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 60 seconds, then reconnect and power on.

Step 2: Check Door Alignment

  • Open the printhead access door and close it firmly until you hear a click.
  • Make sure no packing material or paper scraps are stuck near the hinges or sensor area.

Step 3: Inspect the Sensor

  • The door sensor is usually a small plastic lever or magnetic switch inside the printer near the hinge.
  • Gently clean the area with a dry, lint-free cloth.

Step 4: Update Firmware

Sometimes the error is software-related:

Step 5: Reset Printer Settings

  • On the printer control panel, go to Setup → Printer Maintenance → Restore Defaults.
  • Reconnect to Wi-Fi and re-add the printer in the HP app.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
