Hi @FRANNIE46
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP OfficeJet 6960 is displaying an error message related to a paper jam or improper tray alignment, even though you don't have a paper jam and the tray is correctly installed. This can be a frustrating issue, but there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve it.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting for HP 6960 Paper Jam/Error Message
1. Check for Actual Paper Jam
Even though you’ve checked, it’s still important to thoroughly inspect the printer for any paper fragments or obstructions that may not be immediately visible.
- Open all paper access areas: Check the rear, front, and any other accessible compartments to ensure no small paper pieces are stuck.
- Clear the paper path: If you find any paper remnants, carefully remove them. Use a flashlight to inspect the interior if needed.
2. Check Paper Tray Alignment
Sometimes, even if the tray appears to be properly inserted, the printer may not detect it correctly.
- Remove the paper tray and then reinsert it carefully to ensure it clicks into place securely.
- Check the paper size: Make sure the paper is properly aligned within the tray and the size settings are correct.
- For standard letter or A4-sized paper, ensure the tray's paper guides are snug against the paper stack.
- Try a different paper type or size to see if that resolves the issue.
3. Reset the Printer
Performing a reset may help clear any temporary errors or stuck processes that could be causing the "paper jam" or "tray issue" error.
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug the printer from the power source for at least 1 minute.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
This can help reset the printer’s internal sensors and clear any stuck errors.
4. Clean the Paper Feed Rollers
If the rollers are dirty, they can cause the printer to incorrectly detect a jam or fail to feed the paper properly.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the front door or the paper tray area to access the rollers.
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water to gently clean the rollers.
- Carefully rotate the rollers to clean all sides.
- Once done, close the printer and try printing again.
5. Check the Paper Sensor
The error could be caused by a malfunctioning paper sensor. The sensor is responsible for detecting the presence of paper and whether the paper tray is correctly inserted.
- Clean the sensor: If the printer has an exposed paper sensor, gently clean it with a soft cloth.
- Inspect for visible damage: Look around the paper tray area to see if any sensor is blocked, misaligned, or damaged.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
