HP ENVY 6055 All-In-One Printer

Keep getting EO error message although there is a brand new black cartridge in there.  Unplugged and plugged in again.  Cleaned contacts.  Checked for firmware updates.  Error message still there.

Hi @kawamichelle, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The E0 error on your HP ENVY 6055 usually indicates a problem with the ink cartridge or cartridge detection system. Since you've already tried the common troubleshooting steps (replacing the cartridge, cleaning contacts, and checking firmware updates), here are a few additional things you can try:

Check Cartridge Installation:

Make sure the new black cartridge is installed correctly. It should click into place firmly. Sometimes, if it's slightly misaligned, the printer won’t recognize it properly.

Clean Cartridge Contacts:
Sometimes, the contacts on the cartridges or inside the printer may get dirty or covered in ink residue, preventing proper communication. Carefully clean the contacts with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab dampened with distilled water. Make sure the cartridges are dry before reinstalling them.

Try Another Cartridge Slot:

If the printer has separate slots for the color and black cartridges, try swapping the cartridges (put the black cartridge in the color slot and vice versa) to rule out a faulty slot.

Reset the Printer:

Perform a hard reset: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source for about 1-2 minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on again.

Use Genuine HP Cartridges:

Ensure you’re using a genuine HP cartridge.

Check for Obstructions:

Inspect the area around the cartridge for any paper or debris that might be preventing proper cartridge movement or detection.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Max3Aj,

I had already tried all of those solutions as referenced in my post. The only one I had not tried was putting the black cartridge in the color slot. But it didn’t work because the two ink cartridges are shaped completely differently. So that’s not even possible:(

Hi @kawamichelle, Thank you for your response.

Since you've already performed the basic troubleshooting steps, let's move on to advanced troubleshooting for the E0 error on your HP ENVY 6055:

1. Perform a Semi-Full Reset (NVM Reset)

This reset clears stored printer settings, including ink cartridge detection issues.

Steps:

  1. Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cable.
  2. Press and hold the Power button and the Cancel button simultaneously.
  3. While holding these buttons, reconnect the power cable.
  4. Continue holding the buttons until the printer powers on.
  5. Release the buttons and wait for the printer to initialize.

2. Manually Force a Firmware Downgrade

If a recent firmware update caused the issue, downgrading to an earlier version may resolve it.

Steps:

  1. Download the previous version of the firmware from the HP support website.
  2. Put the printer in Update Mode:
    • Turn off the printer.
    • Hold the Wi-Fi and Cancel buttons together while turning it back on.
    • Keep holding until the Power button starts blinking.
  3. Run the firmware downgrade tool on your PC.
  4. Wait for the downgrade to complete and restart the printer.

3. Check for Residual Ink Data in Printer Memory

If an old cartridge's data is stuck in the system, the printer may not recognize the new one.

Steps:

  1. Remove both cartridges from the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cable and wait 5 minutes.
  3. Plug it back in and turn on the printer without inserting cartridges.
  4. When prompted, insert the black cartridge first, then the color cartridge.
  5. Close the lid and check if the error persists.

4. Check for Hardware Failure (Cartridge Sensor Issue)

If the printer's ink sensor is damaged or misaligned, it won't detect cartridges properly.

Steps:

  1. Open the cartridge access door and inspect the small metal chip reader pins inside.
  2. If any pins are bent or missing, the printer may need hardware servicing.
  3. Try gently bending any misaligned pins back into place with tweezers.

5. Use HP’s Internal Diagnostic Menu

HP printers have a hidden service menu to run hardware tests.

Steps to Enter Diagnostic Mode:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Press and hold the Wi-Fi and Back buttons together.
  3. While holding, turn the printer back on.
  4. The diagnostic menu will appear on the screen.
  5. Run a Cartridge Diagnostic Test to check for issues.

6. Replace the Ink Cartridge Again

Even new cartridges can be defective. Try:

  • Inserting a different new black cartridge.
  • If the error disappears, the previous cartridge was faulty.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
