HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw

Unable to connect to ‘HP Color LaserJet MFP M281fdw (372703)._ipps._tcp.local.’ due to an error.

I keep getting the above message despite trying multiple things to add my printer. It is on the same network as my laptop and desktop and I am not able to print (can't communicate with the printer) so I deleted my printer and am trying to add it back. I have the latest update on my laptop and desk (both Apple products).

Hi @SCMama1,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're having trouble re-adding your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw printer to your network. The error message you're seeing often indicates issues with network communication or printer discovery.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

Check Printer Connection:

  • Ensure that the printer is powered on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your laptop and desktop.
  • Print a network configuration page from the printer's control panel to verify the network settings and IP address.

Restart Devices:

  • Restart your printer, laptop, and router. Sometimes a fresh start can resolve network issues.

Update Printer Firmware:  Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Make sure your printer's firmware is up to date. You can check for firmware updates via the printer's control panel or HP's website.

Reset Network Settings:

  • On the printer's control panel, go to the network settings and select the option to reset network settings. This will clear any old network configurations and allow you to set up a fresh connection.

Re-add Printer:

  • After resetting the network settings, try adding the printer again using the HP Smart app or through your computer’s print settings.

Check Firewall/Security Software:

  • Ensure that your firewall or security software on your laptop or desktop is not blocking the printer. Temporarily disable the firewall to test if it's causing the issue.

Manual IP Address Addition:

  • If automatic discovery fails, you can add the printer manually using its IP address:
    • Open System Preferences on your Mac.
    • Go to "Printers & Scanners."
    • Click the "+" button to add a printer.
    • Select "Add Printer or Scanner" and then choose "IP."
    • Enter the printer’s IP address and use the "Line Printer Daemon - LPD" protocol.

Verify mDNS Service:

  • Ensure that the Multicast DNS (mDNS) service is enabled on your network. This is required for local network devices to be discovered.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
