Hi @MyChap,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP 8020 is showing a printhead error and you can’t use the printer. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Power reset the printer

Keep the printer on, unplug the power cable from the back.

Wait 60 seconds, plug it back in, and let it restart fully.

This clears temporary printhead communication faults.

Remove and reseat the ink cartridges

Open the ink access door and wait for the carriage to move to the center.

Remove all cartridges, check for ink leaks or debris, then reinstall them firmly.

A loose cartridge can trigger the printhead error.

Clean the electrical contacts

Turn the printer off and unplug it.

Gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on both the cartridges and inside the carriage using a lint-free, lightly damp cloth.

Dust or dried ink can block the printhead's electrical connection.

Check for stuck carriage movement

With the printer unplugged, slide the carriage left and right.

Make sure nothing is blocking it (paper bits, label pieces, etc.).

Restricted movement can cause a printhead failure message.

Run the built-in printer reset

On the touchscreen, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead (if the menu is accessible).

This forces the printhead to cycle and may clear internal errors.

Try starting with cartridges removed

Power on the printer without the cartridges inserted.

If the error changes to “Insert Cartridges,” the printhead may still be functional.

Then reinsert the cartridges one by one to check for a faulty one.

Make sure the printer has the latest firmware

If the screen is usable, go to Setup > Printer Update.

Firmware updates can fix printhead calibration issues.

If the printhead is built-in and not removable

Some HP 8020 series models have a non-removable printhead.

In that case, repeated errors usually mean the printhead needs cleaning or replacement, which can only be done through servicing.

I hope this helps.
