I have an HP 6950 printer. Despite having genuine HP cartriges the printer refuses to print. It insists I have a fake cartridge. I havent used it for well over a year as I have gone back to my old HP.

So, I want to sell it but, I am told that the problem will remain throughout it's life. Factory reset does nothing, it continues to refuse to print or copy. Is there an answer other than disposal

Hi @Stansboy

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP 6950 printer is refusing to recognize genuine cartridges, it can be frustrating, especially when you're looking to sell it. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

1. Check Cartridge Installation

  • Remove the cartridges and check for any protective tape that may not have been removed.
  • Reinstall the cartridges, making sure they click into place securely.

2. Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Power off the printer and remove the cartridges.
  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently clean the copper contacts on both the cartridges and the printer’s cartridge slot.

3. Update Firmware

  • Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve recognition issues. Check the HP support website for any available firmware updates for your printer model.

4. Reset the Printer

  • Although you mentioned that a factory reset didn’t help, you can try this again:
    • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, plug it back in, and power it on.

5. Try Different Cartridges

  • If possible, try using a different set of genuine HP cartridges to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is with the cartridges or the printer itself

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
