Paper tray 2 will not close.  Using standard 8 1/2 by 11.  Had printer for years.  First time it has jammed.

There are two common causes for this and I suggest you check these two things and post back if the problem is not resolved.

First, remove the tray and look into the tray cavity. I see by your model number you do not have a duplex modem but it is still possible that you have a duplex diverter in the printer. This is a green tray that is supposed to be lifted up to the top of the cavity and locked there. If it is blocking the cavity, lift it up until it locks in the upper position.

Secondly, these printers can accomodate legal paper in tray 2 but to do that the tray extends so it sticks out the front of the printer by about 2-3 inches when legal is loaded. There is a blue lever on the right front of the tray that acts as the lock. Make sure the tray is closed, see picture below.

Thanks, your answer about the blue release button was the solution.  I'll go to the HP community first in the future.  The HP Laser Jet 475 has been solid as a rock.  First issue I've had with it.  Think I've had it ten years.
