Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My Officejet Pro 8600 was turned off before a thunderstorm.  When I turned it back on it started it's usual routine, stopped, started again and then stopped again.  This time, an error message that read: Printer Failure: There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off then on again. If problem persists, contact HP.  It has persisted so, I am contacting HP.

Did the total unplug from wall, etc. and still the same failure message.  Where should I begin?

Hi @MSrailfan ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are encountering the "Printer Failure: There is a problem with the printer or ink system" error on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

  • Restart the Printer: Ensure the printer is turned off, wait for about 60 seconds, and then turn it back on. This sometimes resolves temporary errors.
  • Check Ink Cartridges: Ensure that all ink cartridges are properly installed and that there are no empty or low ink cartridges. Sometimes, reseating the cartridges can also help establish proper contact.
  • Check for Paper Jams: Open the printer and check for any paper jams or obstructions that may be causing the issue. Even small pieces of torn paper can cause problems.
  • Reset the Printer: Perform a partial reset of the printer. This can be done by unplugging the power cord from the printer while it is still turned on, waiting for 30 seconds, and then plugging it back in.
  • Update Printer Firmware: Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. Sometimes, firmware updates include fixes for common issues.
  • Check Printer Connections: Verify that the printer is properly connected to your computer and there are no loose connections between the printer and power source.
  • Clean Printhead: If the issue persists, you may need to clean the printhead. Your printer should have an option in the menu for printhead maintenance. Follow the printer's instructions for cleaning the printhead.

I have done everything you said above here, cleaned printer head and all metal contact with WD40, the printer failure message still there. it is wielded that when I insert Magenta cartridge ( it is full), it shows ink is low.  When I put in the low ink

Magenta cartridge in, it shows ink is almost full.
