Hi @Dave855,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error message you're encountering on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus could indicate a few possible issues with the printer or ink system. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem.

Restart the Printer: You've already tried this, but it's good to ensure it's completely powered off and then turned back on after a few minutes.

Check the Ink Cartridges:

  • Make sure the ink cartridges are properly installed and securely seated in their slots.
  • Verify that you're using genuine HP ink cartridges and that they are not low on ink or expired.
  • Try reseating the cartridges by taking them out and putting them back in.

Inspect for Paper Jams: Sometimes, even small paper jams or debris inside the printer can cause ink system errors. Open the printer and check for any paper jams or obstructions.

Clean the Printhead:

  • If the printhead is clogged, it can cause issues with the ink system. Most HP printers have a cleaning cycle that you can run through the printer's menu or software on your computer.
  • You might also need to physically clean the printhead. HP usually provides instructions on how to do this in the printer's manual or on their support website.

Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a reset of the printer to clear any temporary issues. This can often resolve software-related problems.
  • Instructions for resetting your specific model can typically be found in the printer's manual or on HP's support site.

Update Firmware:

  • Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve known issues and improve printer performance.

By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and resolve the "problem with the printer or ink system" error on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
