Hi @LuchoS1959,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Dealing with an "Improper Shutdown" message and a paper jam on your HP OfficeJet 8600 can be quite frustrating, especially if the usual troubleshooting steps haven’t worked. Here’s a detailed guide to help you resolve these issues:

1. Addressing the "Improper Shutdown" Message:

The "Improper Shutdown" message usually indicates that the printer did not power off correctly, potentially due to a power outage or an unexpected shutdown. Here’s how to address it:

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn Off the Printer: Press the power button to turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the Printer: Disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet and the printer.
  • Wait: Leave it unplugged for at least 30 seconds.
  • Plug It Back In: Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.
  • Check for Message: See if the "Improper Shutdown" message persists after the restart.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn Off the Printer: Press the power button to turn it off.
  • Disconnect Power: Unplug the power cord.Wait for 60 Seconds: This ensures that all residual power is drained.
  • Plug the Printer Back In: Reconnect the power cord.Turn On the Printer: Press the power button to turn it back on.

2. Resolving the Paper Jam Issue:

Paper jams can occur in several places within the printer. Follow these steps to clear the jam and prevent it from happening again:

Turn Off the Printer:

  • Power Down: Press the power button to turn off the printer before attempting to clear the jam.

Open the Printer’s Doors:

  • Front Cover: Open the front cover where the print cartridges are located.
  • Rear Access Door: If your model has a rear access door, open it to check for jams.

Remove Paper Jam:

  • Gently Pull: Carefully pull out any jammed paper you see. Avoid tearing the paper to prevent small bits from getting stuck inside.
  • Check for Debris: Look for any small pieces of paper or foreign objects that may be causing the jam.

Inspect Paper Path:

  • Remove Cartridges: If needed, remove the print cartridges to access the paper path more easily.
  • Check Rollers: Ensure that the paper feed rollers are clean and not obstructed.

Reload Paper:

  • Paper Tray: Make sure that the paper is properly loaded in the paper tray and that the paper guides are correctly aligned.
  • Avoid Overloading: Do not overload the paper tray; ensure the paper is within the recommended limit.

Close All Doors:

  • Securely Close: Make sure that all covers and doors are securely closed before turning the printer back on.

Turn On the Printer:

  • Power On: Press the power button to turn the printer back on and check if the error messages are cleared.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
