Hi @ryegge88

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP ENVY Inspire 7900 is experiencing intermittent connectivity or communication issues that require you to frequently power cycle the printer in order to get it to print. This can be caused by several factors, including connectivity problems, firmware bugs, or issues with the printer's hardware or settings.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Printer's Connection

  • Wi-Fi Connection: If your printer is connected wirelessly, ensure that it's connected to the correct Wi-Fi network. You can check this via the printer’s control panel or by printing a network configuration page from the printer's settings menu.
  • Reboot Router: Sometimes, the issue might be with your router. Power cycle your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in.
  • Move Closer to Router: If the printer is far from the router or there are obstructions, consider moving it closer to the router to improve the signal strength.

2. Check Printer Queue and Restart Print Spooler

  • Clear Print Queue: If there’s a stuck print job in the queue, it can prevent other documents from printing. Go to your computer’s Print Queue and cancel any stuck jobs.
  • Restart Print Spooler:
    • Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • Find Print Spooler in the list, right-click on it, and select Restart.

3. Firmware and Software Updates

  • Check for Firmware Updates: Go to HP Support or use the HP Smart app to check for any available firmware updates. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause intermittent connectivity and printing issues.
  • Update Printer Drivers: Ensure that you have the latest drivers installed on your computer. You can download the most recent drivers from HP’s support website.

4. Reset Printer Settings

  • Try resetting the printer settings to restore factory defaults:
    • On the printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Restore Defaults or Reset.
    • After resetting, reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi (if necessary) and check if the issue persists.

5. Power Cycle and Check Power Source

  • Power cycling the printer seems to help temporarily, but it may indicate an underlying issue with the printer’s power supply or internal communication. Ensure the power cord is securely plugged into both the printer and the power source.
  • Test the printer on a different power outlet if possible to rule out power issues.

6. Use USB or Wired Connection

  • If you continue to experience issues with wireless printing, try connecting your printer via USB cable directly to your computer to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the issue is related to the wireless connection.

I hope this helps.
