Hi @lee979

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The "E0" error code on your HP DeskJet Plus 4158 All-in-One Printer indicates a problem with the newly installed cartridges or how they're seated.

Let's troubleshoot step by step to resolve this:

1. Check Cartridge Compatibility

Ensure the ink cartridges you installed are the correct ones for your DeskJet Plus 4158. For this printer, you should use HP 67 or HP 67XL cartridges.

If you’re using third-party or refilled cartridges, they might not work properly with your printer.

Note: HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP or refilled cartridges. HP recommends using genuine HP ink or toner supplies available from the HP Store. Go to HP Anti Counterfeiting and Fraud Program for more information on using authentic HP cartridges.

2. Reseat the Ink Cartridges

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.

Open the cartridge access door and carefully remove the cartridges.

Inspect the cartridges:

Ensure there’s no protective tape left on the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles.

Check for any dirt, debris, or damage on the cartridges.

Reinsert the cartridges firmly into their slots (black in the right slot and color in the left slot), ensuring they click into place.

3. Reset the Printer

After reseating the cartridges, close the access door.

Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Wait for the printer to initialize and see if the "E0" error clears.

4. Clean the Cartridge Contacts

If the error persists, clean the electrical contacts:

Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the gold or copper-colored contacts on the cartridges.

Also clean the corresponding contacts inside the printer.

Allow everything to dry before reinserting the cartridges.

5. Run Printer Maintenance

If the printer turns on without the error, use the HP Smart app or your printer’s menu to perform a cartridge alignment and cleaning.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
