I have a Officejet Pro 8610 and I keep getting an error message: "The print head appears to be missing, not detected or incorrectly installed" .  Error code:  Oxc1990040.  I have done nothing to the print head.  Resetting the printer doesn't change anything.

Hi @Superdad51 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with the print head on your HP Officejet Pro 8610. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

  • Restart the Printer: Sometimes a simple restart can fix temporary glitches. Turn off the printer, wait for a few minutes, and then turn it back on.
  • Check Print Head Connections: Make sure that the print head is properly installed and seated in its carriage. Open the printer cover and remove, then reseat the print head firmly into its slot.
  • Clean Print Head Contacts: Over time, the contacts on the print head and inside the printer carriage can accumulate dust or ink residue, leading to poor connections. Gently wipe the contacts with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol. Be careful not to touch the nozzles or electrical contacts with your fingers.
  • Update Printer Firmware: Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. You can usually check for updates through the printer's control panel or the HP website. Update the firmware on an HP printer
  • Reset the Printer: Perform a full reset of the printer to clear any temporary errors. Instructions for resetting the printer can usually be found in the user manual or on the HP support website.
  • Replace Print Head: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's possible that the print head itself is faulty or damaged. In this case, you may need to replace the print head. Contact HP support or check their website for information on obtaining a replacement print head for your specific printer model.
