Hi @LarryJG

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your HP Officejet Pro 8620 is stuck in a frustrating loop where it won’t recognize the printhead, even after multiple attempts to reinstall it. Here are a few troubleshooting steps that might help:

1. Reseat the Printhead (Up to Three Times)

  • Open the printer’s cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop moving.
  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Lift the carriage latch, slightly lift the printhead, then lower it back into place.
  • Wiggle the printhead left and right gently to ensure it’s seated properly.
  • Lower the carriage latch and close the access door.
  • Reconnect the power cord and check if the error persists.

2. Clean the Printhead Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the access door and locate the electrical contacts on the printhead.
  • Using a lint-free cloth or coffee filter slightly dampened with distilled water, gently clean the contacts.
  • Be careful not to touch the nozzles or copper-colored contacts.
  • Let it dry for a few minutes before reinstalling.

3. Update Printer Firmware

  • HP occasionally releases firmware updates that fix printhead recognition issues.
  • Visit HP’s support page and check for the latest firmware update for your model.

4. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and restart.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, the printhead itself may be faulty and require replacement. Let me know how it goes!
